German women living at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century have paved the way to modernity for the female gender in Germany. Mary Hargrave portrays the most important ones, who built their personality and fame by networking through keeping open houses for the noteworthy of their time and keeping contact to other women by letters. Mary Hargrave wrote essayistic texts on history, women and music and is, unfortunately, forgotten today, even though she gives such colourful, well researched and enjoyable pictures of her subjects.
