In this, the 14th volume of his Rougon-Macquart cycle, Emile Zola depicts the life struggles of an artist, Claude Lantier--the elder brother of Etienne Lantier ("Germinal"). The book describes his genius, his struggles both to complete his works, and his failure at gaining acceptance, and his tragic end.
